Label
Credits on his British Parlophone Issues.
(Compiled
by Norman Field, Mark Stephens and Mike Thomas.)
First
line: Sequential number,
master number and title.
Second line: Catalogue number,
year of issue, type and size of label.
Third line: Label credit of the
issue.
Fourth line: Reissue catalogue
number, year of reissue. (If applicable).
Fifth line: Label credit of
the reissue.
Some
of the years of issue are approximate.
In the
case of split couplings (here defined as a NON-BIX item, even if it is by
Trumbauer’s Orchestra), an extra line is inserted giving details of what it
was.
When
plum or black label pressings of 'original issues' are known to exist, this is
noted. It is only conjectural at this stage what proportion of originals exist
with the later variant colours. EMI were known to make re-pressings in quite
astonishingly small numbers, maybe only a dozen or so copies. Therefore new
‘discoveries’ can be expected from time to time.

Footnote 1: This record was unknown to me before this listing was compiled. It
is singular because (a) it appears to be extremely rare. Some Second New
Rhythm Style discs are quite elusive, but this one seems to be incredibly hard
to find. Arthur Badrock has told me that a British collector he knows who has
made a speciality for years of collecting ALL the Parlophone Rhythm-Style
Series records (there are several different ones) has never found R2564; and
(b) MY SWEETER THAN SWEET (originally R 583) is one of only two post-Bix
Trumbauers that were reissued. (The other is LOVE AIN'T NOTHIN' BUT THE BLUES,
which was first on R644 (backed by MARCH OF THE HOODLUMS by Ed. Lang's Orch.),
and reissued on R2541 (backed by CHERRY by the Big Aces, but credited to The
Big Chocolate Dandies). This is also scarce; indeed it is one of the rare cases
where an original issue is more common than its reissue! (Since this
list was originally compiled in late summer 2000, I’ve been lucky enough to
acquire both these, thereby hopefully proving the truth of the saying:
‘Everything comes to he who waits’!)
Footnote 2: This is the only Bix side that ever appeared in the important
Parlophone ‘New Rhythm Style Series’. There was, initially, no pressing need
for any others, as the majority of the ‘original issues’ in the list above were
still available at the time under their original catalogue numbers. I LIKE THAT
is No.39 in the series. Nevertheless, there then followed a very long period
(1930-34) during which no more Bix sides were issued here! The reason for this
grave omission is not known to us.
